The museum’s history spans more than two centuries, beginning in 1811 with the founding of the Ornithologische Gesellschaft zu Görlitz, an association dedicated to the study of birds. In 2009 it merged with Senckenberg and was accepted into the Leibniz Association.
In fifteen sections, natural scientists research the diversity
and ecology of soil organisms, mammals, ants, slugs, vascular plants,
fungi, and lichens in Europe and Asia and explore geological issues.
The museum shows permanent exhibitions on various themes of natural
sciences. In the form of traveling exhibitions on subjects such as soil
and wolves, it makes its research findings accessible for audiences at
home and abroad.
